They could, but they won’t do it. Why?
Because they think they don’t need to.

They’re too busy making crossovers of everything they offer.

They’re too busy selling cars by length like fabric.

There seem to be more than a few offerings in the segment.

Going by that picture, would McLaren build it?

And coupe versions of the crossover versions of the coupes.

So far, BMWs XDrive cars have been fairly unimpressive, so it’s probably for the best. But they do need a balls-out supercar above the Z that’s not electric. Just something thats more SLS than R8.

*looks at R8 sales figures*
Noooooope. No idea why.

Supercars are like Jäger shots. You can’t have too many.

That was the idea. But then the people from the M division got offended, and the whole thing was left in the air.

For prestige and for glory. Life is about more than money.

Tell that to ze Germans. The R8 only exists because Audi developed the Gallardo platform for Lamborghini.

Because that other BMW supercar was soooo successful.

They have the I8, which quite honestly, given it’s exotic appeal, is a lot more profitable then any expensive to build or develop supercar.

The closest you could get to a BMW supercar is an i8 with a M6 engine swap for just $750k..

I dunno about that, everybody is over the moon with how the X5M and X6M appear to defy physics thanks to their trick xdrive systems. I’d imagine any AWD R8 fighting supercar would inherit the same systems.
I would, however, love to see a RWD i8-derived turbo 2.0L I4 with all the electric parts stripped out. I think 300-350hp would be perfect, and it would likely weigh 2600-2700lbs.

No, but they do make an R1 rival.

The R8 was basically a mobile advertisement for Audi, it made them look “cool” again so the brand could finally be seen as a serious alternative to BMW and Merc.
So it was successful for Audi’s image, not on its own.

True. Also, BMW doesn’t really need a shot in the arm like Audi did.

I know the M6 isn’t quite the same approach...but is it so different?

And sedans versions of the coupe crossovers with -1" roofline

well there are the rumors of a FR sport coupe partnership with Toyota. 120k+ is a smaller market, though Porsche sells plenty of 911s.
As Maclaren keeps moving downmarket to increase volume I doubt they’d want to build it. Though maybe as a sub-contractor, removes some of the risk maybe I’m wrong.
Other than the M1 BMW has never had a MR car. it would be a huge change of strategy. They’ll try every sedan/coupe/4door coupe because those are cheap, just some body changes.
